How to Bleed Your Radiators and Save on Energy Bills

As we transition from warmer months to cooler times of the year, it's crucial to ensure your heating system is working efficiently. Trapped air in radiators can significantly diminish their effectiveness, leading you to crank up the heat or adjust the boiler thermostat unnecessarily, which in turn escalates your energy consumption and bills. Here's a simple guide to bleeding your radiators, which can help improve their efficiency and warmth distribution around your home.

Why Bleed Your Radiators?

Over time, air can get trapped in your radiators, causing them to heat unevenly. This trapped air prevents hot water from fully circulating, leading to cold spots, especially at the top of the radiator. Instead of opting for higher thermostat settings, which waste energy and increase costs, bleeding your radiators can be a straightforward and cost-effective solution to such issues.

Getting Started

Before you begin, you'll need a radiator key, easily available for around £3 at your local DIY shop. The best time to bleed your radiators is during the summer months when your heating is more likely to be off for an extended period, ensuring safety and convenience.

Step-by-Step Guide to Bleeding Your Radiators

  1. Preparation: Lay an old towel under the radiator pipes and place a bowl or jug beneath the bleed valve to catch any water that escapes.
  2. Bleeding Process:
    • Insert the radiator key into the valve at the top of the radiator.
    • Slowly turn the key a quarter to half way. You'll hear a hissing sound—this is the trapped air escaping.
    • Once the hissing stops or water starts to flow steadily, close the valve tightly.
  3. For Combi Boiler Owners: After bleeding your radiators, it's necessary to check the boiler's water pressure. Most combi boilers come with a pressure gauge. If you see the gauge indicating a low pressure (in the red), use the short flexible pipe and taps attached to your boiler to increase the water pressure until it returns to the optimal level (in the green). Remember to turn off both taps once done.
  4. Maintenance Tip: Plan to check your radiators for air annually, or sooner if you notice cold spots or hear gurgling in the pipes.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure your radiators are working efficiently, saving energy, and maintaining a comfortable home environment.

Regular maintenance not only enhances your comfort but also extends the lifespan of your heating system, ultimately leading to energy savings and peace of mind.
